Hudson Map Company store in Mpls. set to close
MINNEAPOLIS -- Hudson Map Company has stood at the corner of 25th Street and Nicollet Avenue for the past 35 years, before that for 60 years at another Minneapolis location and in total it's been around for 120 years, it's been a nice run, but the shop is headed in another direction.
"There are days where I may not have one customer," explained Chuck Hall.
At its highest sales point, Hudson Map sold more than 100,000 of the familiar Twin Cities map books. Currently, it's lucky to sell 10,000.
Topographic maps used to be gold in the map world, selling for several dollars each, now, they can't give them away.
"They have their smart phones, and that is their computer and they can put any apps they want on it," said Hall. "And a lot of those people will never buy a street atlas 'cause they won't buy paper."
Additionally, they'll likely never find the need to walk into a map store, so the Hall family has decided it's time to close the doors and focus their efforts to a more online business where they can sell nearly anything to nearly anyone.
The Map Room: Map Books of 2010

Once again, to help with your gift shopping, I’ve compiled a list of noteworthy books about maps that were published in 2010. There are 10 books on the list this year: they include new atlases, web mapping manuals, a history of the Ordnance Survey, curated collections of maps, and scholarly studies of the use and power of maps.
The list can be found in three places: here for Canada , here for the U.K. , and here for the U.S. — choose the one that best suits your location. Sales from these pages generate affiliate revenue for this blog; you may have noticed that I’ve started adding Amazon referral links for their Canadian and U.K. operations, which is why everything is now in triplicate....
The Map Room: Best-Selling Map Books of 2010
Eleven best-selling map books. This list is based on Amazon orders made through this website that were tracked by my Amazon Associates account. Dark and sinister magic was used in the event of a tie. Because of a tie, there are eleven books on this year’s list, rather than ten.
Once again, this list is likely to reflect the amount of attenion I’ve paid to each title — in that you’d expect a book I blog about six times to do better than one I’ve only mentioned once — but in practice it’s not necessarily so. Books I reviewed nearly three years ago are still there, and books I’ve reviewed during the past year aren’t. In the end, and as I said last year , readers determined these rankings more than I did.
