Lebanon Valley College Faculty to Review Books at Cornwall Manor and Mt. Gretna
ANNVILLE, PA (05/23/2011)(readMedia)-- Twenty Lebanon Valley College professors will call on their expertise and special interests this summer as they discuss a wide-ranging collection of books in two separate book review series that are free and open to the public. One series will be on Mondays at 1:45 p.m. from June 13 to Aug. 22 at Freeman Auditorium, Cornwall Manor, Cornwall. The second series will be on Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m. from June 14 to Aug. 16 at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Community Building in Mt. Gretna. Each session begins with coffee and cookies, followed by the book review.
At Mt. Gretna:
June 14, Dr. Howard L. Applegate, professor emeritus of history and American studies, Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend by James Hirsch. Biography of Baseball Hall of Famer, Willie Mays, and his upbringing in Alabama, facing prejudice, and becoming one of Major League Baseball's early African American heroes, known as the "Say Hey Kid."
June 21, Dr. James H. Broussard, professor of history, Gordon Wood's Empire of Liberty: A History of the Early Republic, 1789-1815. The book focuses on an early American republic, growing as a national government until the war of 1812.
