Cincinnati tax preparer pleads guilty to filing false returns

The owner of a Cincinnati tax preparation company pleaded guilty to filling false income tax returns.

John W. Humphrey III , 45, of Cincinnati, pleaded guilty to one count of willfully filing a false federal income return with the Internal Revenue Service and one count of aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false federal income tax return, according to a news release. Humphrey, who owns and runs And the End LLC., defrauded the government out of $70,135.

Humphrey was released on bond and will be sentenced on Sept. 21. The maximum sentence is three years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

“(Sentencing) is really at the hands of the judge within the parameter of the federal sentencing guidelines,” said Craig Casserly , public information officer for the IRS.

From 2007 to 2009, Humphrey falsified the amount of profits clients earned, which increased the maximum amount of Earned Income Tax Credit each could receive, according to the release. Large income tax refunds also increased the likelihood that clients could obtain their returns earlier via a Refund Anticipation Loan.

She was far from being a procrastinator, she just had too much work. When it got down to the last minute, she was rushing to file my return along with the others. Tax prep/insurance franchise launches in Valley | insurance ...

A California-based tax preparation/auto insurance franchise sweeping Hispanic markets around the country has arrived in Brownsville.

Fiesta Auto Insurance launched in 1999 in response to the booming demand for auto insurance among underserved Hispanic and blue-collar communities in Southern California.

The company began franchising in 2006, and last year embarked on an aggressive franchising blitz, the goal being to open more than 1,500 locations over the next five years in markets such as Texas, Arizona, Florida, Illinois and New York.

Fiesta touts itself as the only firm in the country offering tax preparation and insurance under one roof.

Texas has 20 Fiesta franchises so far, most of them concentrated in the metro regions of Austin, Dallas-Forth Worth and Houston.
