Peace walk to remember apology

He Native Friendship Centre of Calgary is hosting their fourth annual edition of Truth and Reconciliation Walk for Peace.

Four years ago, June 11 Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a historic statement of apology to the House of Commons to aboriginal Canadians. The apology was the abuse, many Aboriginal people suffered in residential schools for over a century.

Since an apology from Mr. Harper, organizations across the country marked the anniversary with local community events.

Harper spoke of a somber tone during the delivery of the statement back in 2008.In his apology, he acknowledged that "the treatment of children in residential schools is a sad chapter in the history of [Canada]." Harper went on to explain that "the government now recognizes that the consequences of residential schools policy were profoundly negative and that this policy has had a lasting and damaging impact on aboriginal culture, heritage and language.
