Indonesian pairs reach final of Thailand GP Gold

BANGKOK: Recently reunited Indonesian mixed doubles pair Nova Widianto and Vita Marissa booked their way into the final of the US$120,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold in Bangkok on Sunday after a grueling semifinal on Saturday.

Seeded eighth in the event, the rising world number 40 pair, who reunited early this year after seven years apart, struggled for an hour to beat Koreans Shin Baek-choel and Kim Min-jung 21-17, 20-22, 21-18.

On Sunday, they face fourth seed Taiwanese Lee Sheng Mu and Chien Yu Chin, who also fought a hard semifinal battle Saturday against All England champions Xu Chen and Ma Jin of China, coming out on top 17-21, 21-19, 21-15.

Nova and Vita’s best performance so far has been appearances in the quarterfinals of the India Open Super Series and the Australia Open Grand Prix Gold.

Another Indonesian pair cruising its way into the final is world number 10 men’s doubles duo Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan.

The idea of play as labour or games as productive or play / work not being opposites - is not new. Kücklich (2005) wrote Precarious Playbour: Modders and the Digital Games Industry, where he looked at modding culture as a particular form of labour within emerging play practices. Malaby (2003) wrote about the cultural use of games and gambling in Greece as a way to manage uncertainty through, in part, the production of determinative outcomes; and many here and elsewhere have long rejected the play / work dichotomy.  

Looking more widely, a useful but perhaps gross simplification of the range of notions of play-labour may be seen as sitting on a continuum with utopian views of play at one end and dystopian views of digital labour at the other.
